Maybe I am just being pedantic, but does it bother anyone else when people call wheels rims? The rim is just the outer part of the wheel. When you are referring to the whole thing, it is a wheel. You can have a bent rim, but you don't buy just a rim, its the whole wheel (unless you manage to buy just the rim part of a 3 piece wheel)

for reference:

rim 1

rim/

noun

1 .

the upper or outer edge of an object, typically something circular or approximately circular.

It bothers me to no end if I'm honest, but it seems like the dictionary will end up with something like this in a few years

2. A cylinder one can attach a tyre to, typically used on automotive vehicles.

The lip is also a part of the wheel. I will start calling them "lips"

"Yo bro, I really like your lips!"

For me, Rim is the metal internal, tire is the rubber exterior, and Wheel is the whole package.

Also:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rim

Definitions 3 4 and 5. The internal part of the rim are the spokes and distinct from the rim.

you just said the spokes are part of the rim, but not the rim..... This is why this is wrong. The spokes are part of the WHEEL but not the rim. Also, a tire is not part of the wheel. That is just a fact. Also, 3,4,and 5 support my argument that a rim is just the outer edge of the wheel. Maybe not 5, that deals with mules and shit though.

Yeah. I don't like it either, but then I think flat brim caps, even on racecar drivers, are wrong. I eventually just come around to accept the fact that like the english language itself, automotive nomenclature evolves and I can either be continually disturbed by it or just accept it and move on.

As much of a grammarian as I am, I've got to go with bossyboss on this one. Technically, you are correct. But you fight a losing battle. Every year, I cringe when I hear "Deck the halls" when it really should be "Deck the hall". You're not decorating all the hallways in your home, you are decorating the home itself. Of course, since we in America generally don't own a house large enough to be called a hall, it has changed. It drives me nuts, but it's just the way it is.

Nope, I'm in this boat too.

Trim rings are "rims"

Wheels are the whole assembly.

Meh. Within each field/hobby, there is a certain vernacular that is accepted for example, many people use the term "alloy wheels" to differentiate basically any other wheel from steelies, but steel is also an alloy. Further, plane people think of "proper" rotary engines as radial engines.

So if you have forged rims and you bend one, to fix it do you need a rim-job?

I ever tell you the story of the man with the Intrepid that wanted a price on rims?

I ran his VIN and it showed the car came with steel wheels.

I asked him if that's what he wanted.

"Naw, man I got WHEELS, I want RIMS!" was his reply.

OK.

Vehicle owner: (as he releases the pump and walks in my direction) "WTF did you just say?"

Kinja'd!!!

I think it's better if we stick with "rims."

I could actually see why that would be annoying. "123 signs Drakkon here" "Hi Id like my neon sign fixed it broke"

D: "what kind is it"?

Them: "Neon"

D: "Ok...*prepares to blow glass* and show up

Sign is backlight by florescents.

However when someone says "rim" in relation to a vehicle...we can be 99.99999% sure we know what they mean.

There are actually proper rotary engines that look very much like radial engines, it is pretty nuanced. That is probably where the confusion comes there. Taken from wiki:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Rotary and radial engines look strikingly similar when they are not running and can easily be confused, since both have cylinders arranged radially around a central crankshaft. Unlike the rotary engine, however, radial engines use a conventional rotating crankshaft in a fixed engine block.

Here's a "fun fact" in Norway wheels made of steel are called stålfelg (Steel wheel), aluminium ones are called Alufelg (alu (short for aluminium) wheel). Sometimes we use the word lettmetalsfelg (light metal wheel) though, and that is everything from aluminium wheels to magnesium wheels.

'Rims' east of here (I'm in St Louis) may be more accepted vernacular, but around here, 'rims' come from people who don't have a freaking clue about cars besides where to put the gas so we can go get more beer & hair gel.

I said that I don't consider the spokes different from the rim, but the dictionary does. Everything above "Also" is how I've used it, everything below "also" is this definition I found on the internet.
